5 Reasons Why KDE Plasma is the Best Desktop Environment

KDE Plasma is my favorite desktop environment on Linux. In this video, I offer my Top 5 Reasons why I think KDE Plasma is the best desktop environment for me.

I’ve been using Linux for over 20 years now and through most of that time I jumped around between different distros and different desktop environments (or DEs). I’ve used a wide variety of DE’s over the years. I used GNOME (1, 2 & 3), Cinnamon, MATE, XFCE, Unity for a while and even some window managers like Openbox or tiling like i3.

A while ago, I finally settled on something, a desktop environment. specifically, KDE Plasma.

I had a conversation with some friends who advocated a lot for KDE Plasma and after some convincing, I decided to give it a chance but this time I promised to really dig in to see what it was all about. My previous attempts to try it were kind of surface level tests but they convinced me I should go deeper.

I told them I will try it for a week and if it goes well I might use it longer. That week long experiement has now been . . . hold on . . . oh that’s right, it’s been almost 7 years now. I think it’s safe to say that that the experiment was successful.

In fact, once I started digging in to KDE Plasma I quickly started finding a lot of value especially with all the cool features and hidden gems it has.

I guess you could say I became sort of the Indiana Jones of KDE Plasma looking for the hidden treasures. After a while the same people that were trying to convince me to try it started asking me for tips and tricks to improve their experience.

Now before we jump into the list, I just want to be clear that these reasons are the top 5 reasons I like Plasma but there are MANY more. I originally came up with a Top 10 list but decided I should limit how many I talk about because if I don’t this video could easily be an hour long. šŸ˜€

so with that said, here are My Top 5 Reasons Why I Use KDE Plasma:

  • 3:00 = #1: Customization & Flexibility
  • 3:52 = #2: Reliability & Consistency
  • 4:50 = #3: KWin – Window Manager
  • 6:47 = #4: Optimization of System Resources
  • 7:52 = #5: KDE Connect
